We are building new imaging technologies and applying them to fundamental questions in gene regulation, chromatin biology, and spatial genomics. We are looking for curious, driven people at all levels who want to be part of this effort.
Postdoctoral Fellows
We are looking for postdocs who want to lead independent projects at the intersection of technology development and biological discovery. Ideal candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field and a strong publication record. Experience in one or more of the following areas is valued: advanced microscopy or optical engineering, spatial genomics or transcriptomics, computational image analysis or machine learning, single-molecule biophysics, chromatin biology, or molecular biology.
Postdocs in our lab develop deep expertise in imaging technology while driving their own scientific questions. Our alumni have gone on to faculty positions at institutions including the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the University of Alberta, and the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, as well as leadership roles in the biotech industry.
Graduate Students
We welcome rotation students and incoming PhD students from programs across Johns Hopkins, including Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology, and related programs. A typical graduate project in our lab involves some combination of building new instruments, developing computational analysis methods, and applying these tools to answer biological questions. You do not need prior experience in microscopy or imaging. What matters is that you are excited to learn new things and are not afraid of working across disciplines.
Research Staff
We are also looking for research technicians, engineers, and research specialists to support and advance our technology platforms. Positions may focus on instrument design and construction, fluidics and automation engineering, molecular biology and probe preparation, or image analysis and software development. These roles are ideal for individuals who want hands-on experience in a technology-driven lab before pursuing graduate school or careers in the biotech industry.
What We Look For
More than any specific background, we value people who are resourceful, collaborative, and genuinely excited about building new things. Our lab brings together people from diverse fields: biophysics, engineering, computer science, molecular biology, genetics, and chemistry. We believe the best science happens when people with different expertise work together on hard problems.
How to Apply
Please send your CV and a brief description of what you would like to build or discover to Zhe J. Liu at zhejliu@jhu.edu. For postdoctoral applicants, please also include the names of two or three references. We review applications on a rolling basis.
